Rockfall Protection

Rockfall Protection

A rockfall protection is a built-in elevation to the ground to intercept falling rock fragments before elements at risk such as roads and buildings are reached.

Rockfall protection refers to a set of engineering solutions and measures used to prevent or mitigate the effects of falling rocks, typically in mountainous or sloped terrain where there is a risk to people, infrastructure (like roads, railways), or buildings.

The ability of a hill to properly act on rockfall propagation depends on its height and its uphill face inclination. The height is defined based on the rock block passing height at the location, estimated from trajectory simulation numerical tools. A low vertical batter of the face prevents block over-rolling.
