Tunnels are equipped with a drainage system to deal with surface water from portals, groundwater infiltration through the lining, wall washing water, etc. A permanently functional tunnel must maintain the operation and must keep the operating cost low. This includes a primary drainage system to capture hill water or external source water and a secondary drainage system to channel this water in the tunnel cross-section.
